Watercoloring with Zigs Clean Color Real Brush Markers

By Laurel on August 18, 2015

Good morning! Today I have a card to share that uses the Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers. I colored this image a while ago and posted it on social media and received such a warm reception! So I finally finished out the card and sent this off to a friend. I’ve watercolors a few more since then live on Periscope and had a blast talking to you guys!! (Periscope is a live streaming interactive app you can download on your smartphone and interact with the periscoper. My handle is @lbeard).

I purchased my Zig open stock (individually) from Ellen Hutson because I wanted to try them out to be sure I liked them and then I finished out my inventory with colors that I was personally drawn to. I know many that have purchased just the 12 pack and have been quite happy with it as you can mix the colors to create custom colors! I also know plenty who splurged and got the 80 pack!! It’s really whatever you are personally interested in. 🙂 A few resources for the zigs:

Note: I have discovered using the Zigs is all about the paper!!! When I first got them, I hated them! I played with them for hours and couldn’t get them to blend. Then a friend told me it was more than likely my paper! I tried a 90# no name brand I had in my craft room and poof! Magic!!!!! Also, Bristol (which is ironically NOT a watercolor paper) works well with these markers. I prefer a 90# watercolor paper over the Bristol by a tad. But both would work just fine I have found. I have linked to a few papers I use in the supply list.

  • Ellen Hutson (available in sets and individually):  http://goo.gl/0IzlpU
  • Blitsy (a few individual markers and sets on a daily special deal):  http://goo.gl/4d2pJN
  • MarkerSupply (I haven’t personally shopped here but people I know recommend them): http://goo.gl/1N57sH

Thanks so much for stopping by today! 🙂

Hi! I love your card. My question, is there an alternative to the zigs? I have so many others was wondering if I can use this technique with copics or chameleon?

Beautiful card Laurel! I love this emboss resist technique, but have not been brave enough to try it due to cost of supplies and limited budget. I’ll just keep looking at your examples in awe!! 🙂

Such a beautiful card, Laurel. I’m glad you figured out why zigs weren’t working for you, because this card is stunning.

So pretty! I love Zigs, but oddly the warm colors work better for me. The blues and greens don’t seem to “color” as well. Or maybe I have to experiment with papers, too!

Love this! I’ve been trying so hard not to make this purchase. I’ve been wanting to buy maybe a handful, but worried I’ll love them like everyone else and need them all…lol.

    GORGEOUS colouring & card!!!
THANK YOU for sharing your experience too … I always feel like it is just “me” when things don’t work, now, when I do get my markers (going to a craft fair tomorrow, maybe it will be then, fingers crossed) I will be prepared with different papers.
