I bought an art journaling book ions ago and it sat empty for all this time. I had good intentions at the time, but let’s face it.. I’m a card maker…. Mixed media scares the crap out of me…. I am constantly inspired by the art jounaling pages I see around the web and particularly find inspiration with Vicky of Clip-n-Cuts, who is an amazing artist and friend whom I have had the pleasure of meeting (and feeding a peanut butter cookie to, lol)…… She has an awesome youtube channel and I found myself submerged in all her creations! So I did it! I dug around my craft room and found that art journaling book, dusted it off and while simultaneously watching her videos, inspired by THIS particular project/video.
I incorporated a lot of Vicky’s techniques such as tearing the pages and coating the pages before and after with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® Chalkboard Paint™. I coated both pages with Gesso™ and then smeared a bunch of Gelatos® all over the background and just blended it out with my finger. Have that Gesso based paper really makes them blend beautifuly. I also used the Gelatos® in various colors (exact colors listed below) to create the flowers and used Big Brush Pens™ to create the stems…. I applied some Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® Whipped Spackle™ thru THIS STENCIL by The Crafter’s workshop all around the page for some fun texture.
I brushed some Faber Castell Design Memory Craft® Gel Medium™ over the Gelatos® and allowed to dry so I could use my Big Brush Pens™ for shading. If I didn’t apply the gel medium, the Gelatos® would have smeared so the Gel Medium™ acted as a fixadive (another tip from Vicky). I added my phrase with some Thickers and applied Gel Medium™ over the top to secure they won’t ever fall off! 🙂 Create Pretty Things. That’s what we all want to do, right? So for my first page ever, I thought that was perfect….
So there you have it, my first Art Journal. I hope to continue to study and make more advanced layouts. The things people do to create patterns and dimension is amazing. But until then, I’ll stick to the basics… And be sure to share them with you along the way!
I am playing along in The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge this month. The theme is new to you! Well, I’d say this was new to me, wouldn’t you? LOL! I was scared the entire time and I’ll admit, I’m a little afraid of hitting the publish button on the right, lol!
Thanks so much for stopping by today! 🙂

I was in your shoes for a long time and just admired other people’s art journal pages from afar. Then I started collecting supplies and took an online course and Ibwas off and running! The first page is the hardest, by the way. You did a super job of producing your pages and walking us through the steps of your creative process. Kudos.

I too watch and admire Vicky’s tutorials with her art journaling. And I, like you, have toyed around purchasing the items I need to start a journal. But…I’m scared…really scared. But as I think, beauty is in the eye of the beholder how can one make a mistake. Art is Art. So thanks Vicky and now Laurel. Im going to go out, purchase my yummy products and create a monthly journal page. Oh I’m still gonna make my cards too.
Laure….your first page…awesome. And, thank you for sharing it.
This is a promising Blog and I can’t wait to see more!
